Team Jackson paddler Clay Wright hits West Virginia and sent this note to me, worth passing on.

September 17, 2004

‘Almost Heaven’ got a little closer this weekend as Hurricane Francis doused North Carolina, sending a wave of warm water up through the New River and into the Dries. Kayakers from Alabama to Ontario converged on the Laurel Creek put-in waves to sample the clean West Virginia ‘air.’ Everything from slalom racers to handpaddlers took turns on the 3 standing waves out in the center of the river – and most ventured downstream for another adrenaline shot at Mile Long rapid.

The Gauley turned on too. And with an additional 1500 cfs from the Meadow things were rockin below Lost Paddle. Summersville Dam was much less crowded than usual, (perhaps cause of all the options flowing across the SE) but the Meadow Bridge was more crowded than I’ve ever seen it. Perhaps it was the summer-time temperatures and unseasonably warm water? Who knows. Those who ran the Gauley got to enjoy line-free playboating and as much play-time anyone could stand – cause the river ran all night long. Those that ‘missed out’ were probably getting some goods elsewhere? Hope so.

All I know is Hurricane and Gauley season are in alignment once again – Halleluiah!
