The annual Tekapo Throwdown is one of my favourite events. It is held on an artificial segment of the Tekapo spillway that feeds from the glacial lakes above, so the water is never warm but the atmosphere is always high! The 2013 event was brought to us by ‘Up The Creek Kayaks’ (in association with Jackson Kayak) and Cumec Magazine.
This is the first year I haven’t competed in the event since I first started paddling 5 years ago. Even though I was unable to paddle due to shoulder surgery, I felt the need to still go and join in the festivities. It was yet another successful event for Tekapo with a competitive field of all ages. This years event consisted of the infamous ball race, a switch race down the class 2 slalom channel, a teams rescue race, slalom racing and a freestyle showdown to finish off an incredible weekend. I had an amazing time filming, helping out and judging. I can’t wait til next years event when I can fully join in again.
Thanks to all the sponsors for helping make the event happen!
For now though here is a short video recap of the Tekapo Throwdown 2013!
