When it comes to kayak fishing I’ve always been a less is more kinda guy. Less gear to unload from your truck and put in your kayak means you can quickly get in the water and start fishing. BUT here lately I’ve caught myself wishing I had something, or needing something to make my day on the water better in whatever way. When I ordered my last boat I decided to splurge a little and treat myself to some of the “luxuries” of kayak fishing I’ve never had much interest in before now.
For one, I ditched my old milk crate I had told myself I’d never give up, and bought a Black Pak. Then I bought some accessories for it…. (It’s too awesome to just have rod holders and nothing else on it) I picked up an extremely nice and comfortable Astral PFD. I finally got myself an 8ft park’n’pole and a visi-carbon light. And I ordered a couple things from Bending Branches… The new Optimus system, and my favorite paddle ever, a camo Angler Pro that perfectly matches the GI Jackson color.
With all my new toys I kinda feel like a kid on Christmas. I mean when I install, assemble, and get everything situated in my kayak it does look pretty cool, however I’m more excited about the fishability benefit that will come on the water when I put it to use.
The moral of the story is buy what you NEED and what you can afford, after you’ve done some research and spent some time on the water. There are a lot of great products out there, at the same time there’s a lot of stuff that you might not need.
I’m just glad I can anchor anywhere in the river now, I don’t have to find a rock to push up on to fish!!
