It has been quite a while since my last fresh water session for pike. This was going to be a challenge tho I was pretty confident, well for a while anyways!!!!
Last weekend seen the final Irish Kayak Angling competition of the year, this one was in the middle of Ireland on a fresh water venue, Lough Muckno!!!
I spent Friday preparing, making pike traces and organising lures etc, van packed I set of down south to the venue late Friday night. On arrival there was a quick catch up and straight to bed for a decent nights sleep for the comp the following morning.
I woke up to a beautiful sunrise and perfect conditions tho that was soon to chance for the worse. The comp kicked off at 11am with 30 kayaks on the water a new record for the club which was great to see. Things started off well as I had a hook up right away on a dead bait smeared in Bio Edge Smelt wand, once I had the fish to the side of the kayak I lost it…….. That was the only fish I saw that day, I tried everything from dead baits static to trolled, spinners, mepps and jerk baits, nothing seamed to temp a pike tho other lads where catching plenty!!!!!
The weather also picked up to nearly galeforce winds not helping in the slightest. Anyways 7 hours later the competition ended and I ended with a blank!!!!
Saturday night we had the prize giving and a few beers with loads of crack. A few lads headed home as some had 5 plus hours drive a head of them, I decided to say and have another crack at a pike Sunday morning.
Up early and on the water I was straight into pike, for the 3 hours on the water I had 2 pike and lost a third……. Always the way lol the day after the comp. It was a great weekend tho with plenty of crack and a great turn out….
