Will Kayak For Bourbon

The heat of summer is on and the fishing has been stellar but it was time to take my wife on a little weekend getaway. While I have been kayaking for awhile now, she is still very new to the sport. When I picked up our new Liska, Kimberly quickly claimed the kayak for herself. She said she would let me barrow it from time to time of course.

Over the winter I had the opportunity to work the Louisville and Owensboro, Kentucky boat shows with the folks at Canoe Kentucky. It was there that I learned about all of the trips that they have to offer including the Buffalo Trace Bourbon Tour. With Frankfort being only 2 and a half hours away Kimberly and I decided that their Bourbon Tour would be something that we could do together so we made plans and reserved a spot.

The tour offers a different way to view the distillery that several people never get to see from just a standard tour. We was able to paddle down the Kentucky River into lock #4 where we were then lowered down to the next pool and traveled to a private boat ramp. Canoe Kentucky then took us by bus to the distillery for lunch, a tour of Buffalo Trace and of course a few samples of good ol’ fashion Kentucky bourbon. The trip concludes with a return trip up the river paddling back through the lock and to the boat dock.

The trip was mellow and super easy for paddlers that may have never been in a kayak or canoe. If your up for something a little different check out the Canoe Kentucky website. Your welcome to bring your own kayak(s) as we did or even grab a Jackson rental from the crew at CKY.

The team at Canoe Kentucky really does a great job making every guest comfortable. Their group work ethic is pretty amazing to watch. They hit the ground running and really do a great job from start to finish. I think any of us from Jackson Kayak that have crossed paths with the CKY team would tell you the same thing. Kimberly and I both agreed that it was well worth the drive to explore Frankfort, KY with them. Frankfort is also a area we will most definitely be visiting again soon. I think next time I am going to try to sneak some fishing gear in my Big Rig and explore some of more of those local Kentucky waters.

Overall it was a great weekend getaway and something for us to do together. It’s always nice to take a little break from the grind of fishing and spend time with the ones that we love. The best part is the ability to take our fishing kayaks and enjoy just a day of recreational paddling. There’s so much out there to explore and what better way than from the water in a Jackson Kayak.

Stay Crazy- Chad Brock
