Drew, what waders do you use? I’m asking because I want to make sure the footing is secure on the deck of the Coosa with whatever waders I get (Coosa on its way to me!), and I’m sure you’ve got it all done right!

      Thanks.

    2. Al says:

What kayak would you recommend for XL person- 6′-5″ 225. Plan on fishing small bodies of water mostly in and around urban settings. Quick trips to the nearest public lake or accessible creek and occasional float trip.

      • Drew Gregory says:

Al, all of our fishing boats can actually handle someone of your size. The most stable boat for your needs would be the new Big Tuna, which is a solo/tandem kayak that has a recommended weight capacity of around 550lbs. The Coosa would be my second recommendation. What I would do is find your nearest dealer by clicking on dealers up top and then using the dealer locator and testing these boats out. They all carry a demo and would be glad to let you use it to test them out.

    3. Carl says:

      Hey Drew,
I refer to your January 23/12 reply to #6 above. You indicated there would be a new video out on the first Monday of February showing the 2012 Coosa with the new changes. I know it’s only Tuesday but I’m not seeing a new video. Looking hard at buying a fishing kayak and want to see the changes in the Coosa. Let us know when the video is available. Thanks.

      • Drew Gregory says:

Carl, I thought they were going to use it in the new JKTV video that comes out on the first Monday of every month but they didn’t have room for it. I just got back from out of town and will post it up ASAP, thanks and sorry for the delay!

        • Carl says:

No problem, I know what it’s like. Just anxious to see my new Coosa in action before my order arrives in the next 4 weeks or so.
Keep up the excellent work! – Carl

    4. cixco says:

how is the coosa on the sea?
when will the cuda arrive in Europe?

      • Drew Gregory says:

Hmmm, I believe the Cuda should be there very soon if it is not already. Australia already has some so that is why I am assuming it should be very soon or they are likely already there. The dealers there would know best. If you click on dealers on this site it will show you our dealer locator and you should be able to call one close to you and find out. The Coosa is fine to take in the sea as well but if you need to go longer distances or more speed then the Cuda is the better option.

    5. Anthony Bates says:

When are you going to do a video on how to fit out your jackson coosa kayak, show us all the extra option we made have forgotten to add?

    6. marcos says:

is the coosa or cuda compatible for mounting a trolling motor??

    7. Fisherman says:

I purchased the standard coosa & am wanting to upgrade it a little. I can add any set of universsal foot braces i guess but I can’t find the hi/low seat anywhere so far. Can I purchase the seat or any upgrade accessories to fit online? Will the hi/low fit my older standard model without any modifications?

I only have one threaded brass insert in the boat floor (in front of the seat compartment). From the videos of the newer models the seat webbing appears to be ran through two stainless bars or an attachment point in front AND behind the seat compartment.

      Thanks.

      • Drew Gregory says:

Hey Fisherman! You certainly can take that standard and upgrade it all the way to an Elite version! Simply visit the Jackson Kayak Store online here http://store.jacksonkayak.com/categories/Kayak-Fishing-Accessories/ and then order the seat and whatever else you want. As far as the issue with the solo insert we have gone to a different attachment there for 2012 but we can send you the part for your boat (the long piece of webbing and the loop piece and screw that goes in that insert) but it will have to be called in via Jackson Kayak customer service. Call 931-738-2628 and hit extension 115 for Ian. Explain to him what you’re trying to do and he’ll get that sent out to you. Thanks and I think you’ll really enjoy the upgrades!

    8. J Chevallier says:

I will be ordering a Coosa in a few days and was wondering if there is a rudder system available…or if it is even necessary. I will primarily be fishing creeks of lakes and some rivers. Looking forward to getting the kayak. I’ve been without a boat for about six months and I am jonesing.

      • Drew Gregory says:

There is no rudder for the Coosa. I don’t feel it is necessary because if you are fishing mostly rivers a rudder is a negative, as it is just something that A.) you don’t need and B.) will find some way to break. Rivers are rough on boats and the less moving parts the better! You don’t really need the rudder because you want your boat to be very manueverable in the river. Now, if you were fishing more flat water then you can always get a Cuda w/rudder.

    9. bpop says:

Are there any significant changes in the 2012 model?

    10. Norm says:

Just curious about transporting to the yak to the water in remote areas. Is there a cart/wheel attachment. Don’t want a big cart in the back. Thanks.

      • Drew Gregory says:

Norm, there are some brands that fit the Coosa well. I actually can’t remember which ones though! I usually just drag mine with a rope where it is flat on the ground and it slides real well but if you have to go far (and assuming there is a trail) then wheels would be the way to go!

    11. Carl says:

I noticed in accessories, there are scupper plugs. I haven’t been able to determine the purposes/benefits of plugging the scuppers. Any help is appreciated.

    12. zach says:

Just wandering if you guys thought of making a shorter version? I fish the New River in southern West Virginia and need something smaller for maneuverabilty and portage.

    13. German says:

Hola cual es el peso maximo que soportaria gracias. translates to: Hey thanks that is the maximum weight that would support thanks. Drew or Marty?

    14. Chris Strokes says:

I just got myself a Coosa and can’t wait to to take it out for the first time this weekend. I was just wondering about proper way to strap seat down. Is the strap supposed to go over both the back bars on the rear of the seat?

    15. Mike says:

I have had a couple kayaks over the last 10 years and I must say my the Coosa is by far the best. I live north of Atlanta and Yak down the Hooch on the weekends. The Coosa is the perfect boat for river fishing it is super stable, roomy and very functonal. One question, There are 2 foam blocks in the stern hatch of my boat and I was wondering if they are supposed to be affixed some where in the bottom or were they put there for shipping?

Thanks again for this great boat, look me up if you are in Atlanta, would love to fish with you all!

      • tom marks says:

i’m wondering the same thing about the foam. mine were in the front hatch. i don’t have a clue what they are. hope someone answers your question.

        • Drew Gregory says:

The foam is directly under where the locking bar is on the front hatch and it nudges up behind where the cat bag from the day hatch falls. Push it snuggly up in there and if you want to use some contact cement to make sure it stays you can. I actually just remove mine from the boat and if it ever oil cans then I just sit it in the sun to let it pop out.

    16. big drew says:

man, i hope in the near future you guys come up with a 12′-13′ coosa. since your current model is only 11’3″ it’s just a little to short for me…..hint hint.

    17. Michael Hoover says:

Um, took a Coosa out on a demo float this past weekend. Always used canoe’s. This was the first time I have ever used a kayak. I have been converted. I would like to know where I can find all of the accessories for the Coosa because when I purchase it I want to trick it out before I use it. The only thing I think could be improved is it needs a little more dry storage and when the wind was blowing it didn’t track very well. I didn’t have any kind of anchor system though. I absolutely love it though. I’m in Southwest Missouri so I have a lot of areas to river fish. I am looking forward to it. Thanks for a great boat.

      • Drew Gregory says:

Michael, we will have a line of accessories coming out this fall but for now they are mostly all stuff you do yourself like the drag chain. Simply a dog leash and a piece of logging chain. I use the Flexi brand in the size “small” (16 ft) and a piece of chain about as wide as the chutes and about 20 inches long.

As far as dry storage goes, throw a dry bag into the hatches. Tons of room there for as much dry stuff as you want to take with you!

When its windy try dropping the seat to the low position, that helps. Also, on your paddle stroke make sure it goes right along the side of the boat and that will help keep you straight. Glad you love the boat and look forward to hearing about your adventures!

    18. David Ditz says:

Dose the hi lo seat come with the elite model with no extra charge or is it an option?

    19. Tyeler Brown says:

Where do you put the fish you catch? After fishing out of a kayak for a long time, I can personally tell you that a stringer over the side of the boat is awful. So I was wondering if there was anywhere to put a couple walleye or 15-20 perch.

      • Hey Tyeler, I actually have a bin I put behind me in the Coosa. there are straps to hold in in place… most of us catch and release.

      • Tyeler Brown says:

Thats what I figured, I’m mostly a bass fisherman and I don’t like bass so I tend to catch and release, but if I get into a hole where I can reel in the perch one after the other or catch a couple of walleye, I definitely don’t throw those back. Thanks for the answer.

    20. Ken OBrien says:

Just took my Coosa out on it’s maiden voyage . Hooked my first fish and when I reached out with my net the boat flipped . Glad I was in shallow water . I had the seat in the high position so I lowered it .It was alright after that . I would strongly caution using this high position . I did try standing up after for a minute but I didn’t feel very steady .

      • Drew Gregory says:

Hey Ken, definitely get used to where the stability points lie in the boat before graduating to the high position. If you try to run before you can walk, you’ll definitely fall down a lot more. Its the same way with anything. I take some people out who have never kayak fished a day in their life and they are walking around all over the boat fishing like they’ve been doing it all their lives. Then, I take others and they can’t even sit in the high position the first day. Eventually though, over the course of a few trips, everyone gets used to where their limits are on the boat. Some folks naturally have lower center of gravity and better balance than others so for some it just may take a little longer to get to where they can stand comfortably or sit in the comfy high position. And, that’s fine because its not a race, its just relaxation and fishing!

PS. Remember in any kayak never to lean over the edge but rather reach down keeping your weight as centered as possible. Imagine a line running from the bow to the stern handles dead center through the boat and try to keep your weight centered on that line as much as possible. So, if you need to get into your tankwell its not a lean over and reach behind you kind of move so much as it is simply a spinning of your body to get behind you. Make sense? One is leaning over and the other one is just twisting but keeping a nice center point.

        • Clark says:

          Drew,
Give me your opinion on mounting these outriggers to the elite. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TezklfNpSfs

I fished saltwater flats recently and would love something to make standing up in choppy water easier. I’m 230 and it gets difficult if the water is not calm.

If you went with these outriggers, where would you mount them?

          • Drew Gregory says:

I don’t use outriggers so take my opinion with that in mind. However, I don’t see why those won’t work well. If you can attach them (which I am sure you can) then certainly they will help you stand in chop. If you do it, let us know how they work and good luck!

    21. Jim says:

I just purchased a standard Coosa and have upgraded to the high/low seat. Upon installing the seat, there is a web strap that is secured to the floor behind the seat and than the strap continues to the front and attaches to some kind of a threaded brass anchor hole dirctly below the seat. What type of fitting is this and can I order one? I also need the raised cleats that are used to attach the anchor line that go in the pre molded inserts in the hull. Also, there are four threaded brass inserts molded into the floor where the tackle boxes are stored not to be confused where the original seat was attached. What are they for? Any info you can provide is appreciated. Thank you.

      • Drew Gregory says:

Jim, your best bet on this is to give customer service a ring and see if they can sell any of those parts you need. Actually Ian can help you the best probably as he handles most of the fishing related customer service questions. Just call 931-738-2628 extension 115. The inserts are for adding accessories we may be coming out with later or adding an eye bolt on there (10/24 size) and simply attaching whatever you want there – paddle leash, rod tether, stringer, whatever.

    22. Brad Junkin says:

Love the storge space. Here in Northern British Columbia when your in the wilderness, your really in the wilderness. Bears being a concern when fishing remote high mountain lakes and streams, there’s plenty of storge for survival kit, shotgun, and bear spray, as well as all the fishing gear. Design job well done gentlemen.

    23. Doug from Colorado says:

I just got a Coosa for my 50th birthday 5/13/2011. It was a surprise while camping in northern Arkansas. I had ample time to paddle about some smaller creeks for smallmouth bass. In my opinion, limited as it might be, this kayak just might be the best all-around currently on the market. I like the overall stability, the ease at which the craft paddles and turns, storage and especially the seat. It may not track as well as a Ride 135, (my initial first choice after paddling many craft last year) but it certainly is as stable, and standing up and sitting from that adjustable seat is fabulous. I look forward to fishing the kayak on some smaller Colorado rivers and along the Texas.

    24. Doug says:

Diponible is a typo for the word disponible, and it means available.

Funny enough, the word exists in English too:

dispensability – Able to scatter, spread about or distribute widely.

    25. michel says:

je voudrai acheter le kayak standart elite au quebec mes pas de magasin diponible

      • claywright says:

“”I would buy the elite standard kayak quebec but no shop diponible.”" that is what Google Translate gave me to work with and I don’t think it’s enough.
We do not sell direct, but look at our Dealer list on the website to find one near you. Your dealer can order the boat of your choice even if they do not stock it. Lets see how that translate does backwards…. now all this in French:

“” je voudrais acheter le Québec kayak élite standard, mais pas de boutique diponible. “” c’est ce que Google Translate m’a donné de travailler avec et je ne pense pas que c’est suffisant.
Nous ne vendons pas directement, mais regardez notre liste de concessionnaires sur le site Web pour en trouver un près de chez vous. Votre revendeur peut commander le bateau de votre choix, même si elles ne le stock. Voyons comment cela ne se traduisent en arrière ….
