Today was a decisive moment in Jackson Kayak history. Quality or quantity?

April 23, 2004

Some miscommunication caused the 2 Fun hulls to be molded with a finished weight of 21 pounds. The “shot weight” was supposed to be 21 pounds giving you a hull weight of 20 pound after the cockpit is trimmed out. This meant that the assembled weights of the 2 Fun were 27.5 pounds (1.5 pounds more than we promised). Although this is still many pounds lighter than anybody else; it not what we promised. We turned 20+ first quality kayaks into demo boats today. It was an easy call only because we made a promise and will do anything in our power to keep it. If a boat is 1.5 pounds heavy, it is not first quality, period. Quality over quantity is what we will shoot for in everything we do. Less dealers, less boats molded, more focus on each boat. The downside is that you can’t find your favorite Jackson Kayak in any color you want in any store you wander into without either waiting, ordering it, or getting lucky. Yes, we will get over the hump quickly and you will have your boat at your favorite dealer soon. You will still have to order your favorite color probably.

I hope you don’t mind this business strategy. We figure that you believe in our promises, and we will live up to our word, because we have plenty more coming your way in the next 25 years!
