I’m Ty Nelson, and I live to fish. Being born and raised in Southwest Florida, it’s no surprise that I found a passion for fishing at such a young age. At just 14 years old, I began competing and placing in local tournaments targeting Snook, Redfish, and Spotted Sea Trout. After moving to Orlando four years later to attend the University of Central Florida, I felt far from home without a fishing rod in hand.
Little did I know that there was a fantastic fishery on the Space Coast where the world renown Mosquito, Indian River, and Banana Lagoons are located. After some hard work and determination, I persuaded my father to allow me to bring our kayak up to Orlando for my sophomore year of college. From the first trip out to Mosquito Lagoon, I was completely hooked! The ability to stealthily creep up on big redfish and trout in shallow waters — that others simply cannot get to in a boat — is what attracted me to the sport of kayak fishing.
Today, I fish kayak and boat tournaments around the state of Florida, work as a marketing intern for Hell’s Bay Boatworks, and run an informative fishing website: www.shallowwaterz.com. I’ve realized our fisheries in Florida have given me so much, and now it is my turn to return the favor by promoting the conservation of our ecosystems for future generations to enjoy.
