Exploring the underground waters

Close your eyes. Now open them again, and imagine it all stays the same. There is an absolute absence of light where you could fall asleep with your eyes open or closed. You are underground. And right then you realize you have a lamp on your head, so you turn it on to find this mesmerizing new environment. Its like a natural tunnel that was probably formed by an ancient lava flow. The smallest rapids ahead sound like beasts, and even with a light on your head its hard to judge the challenges properly. It also smells funny.

I have paddled this river a couple times now, and every time it blows my mind. It is such a unique experience paddling into this underground world of darkness, and there is nothing like sharing the rush. Last month Rush Sturges and I dropped in for a little quest down the Rio Chontacoatlan in Guerrero, Mexico.
