Lower Florida Keys
Unlike most kayak anglers, I was a kayaker first, and came to angling later. I spent over 6 years as an eco-tour kayak guide here in the Lower Florida Keys, during which time I watched the charter fishing boats bringing in nice catches of snapper, grouper, and other tasty table fare. Curiosity led me to the tackle store, I added a fishing pole to the kayak, and I’ve not been the same since! The Florida Keys’ fishery is world-class, and the paddling here is too. Combining the two gives me the opportunity to fish many different ways – bottom, patch reef, bridges, channels, mangrove edges and basins. But my favorite type of fishing is standing in my Cuda and sight fishing the tropical flats for bonefish, tarpon, and the elusive, mysterious permit. Stalking and hooking a 30lb permit on light tackle from a kayak has no equal in the angling world, and I’m fortunate to have that opportunity in my backyard.
